This month, I would like to focus on my people, my special team.
Many people asked me how I spent my time. I always tell the other party, I spend most of my time finding talents and great people to join me on this worthy journey. Finding gems is already very difficult, even more so to convince the gems to join me. But this is a job that a leader needs to do. I do not believe in outsourcing this task to others or external consultants. I believe, as long as I can, I would want to personally recruit. Yes, I know many would say that it is not possible for me to recruit personally when the company is big. But I would certainly like to prove everyone wrong.
Every single person that has joined us was recruited personally. It takes energy, it takes time and it takes a lot of luck and convincing. Regardless, I think it is worth every bit of my energy so far. I believed I have interviewed (formally or informally) more than 100 over people in these 3 years. It was not easy to separate the real good ones out and then convince them. I have a more fair share of success and I must say, I am very happy with the current team members. They are all elites.
This month, I have some time to think about the team. We have fellow members who became first-time fathers, we have a member who got married and we have members that came from different parts of the world to join us. It is amazing. Among all my fellow members, one stands out. He has been with us for a long time. In fact, he is my first employee. My first official recruit. These three years, seeing him grow and develop into a fine engineer, it is really satisfying. His devotion and passion for the very product that we are building is amazing. This month, we have an urgent request to deliver an upgraded version to an overseas customer. With very limited time, he was involved in testing and ensuring that the released version passed all test items. We knew time was not on our side. And yet, he managed to pull it off with his devotion. He worked through the weekend to ensure that we have the released version ready on Monday. This is certainly the kind of drive and passion that we need. Thanks.
Of course, my other fellow members – all have made their individual sacrifices to make things happen. That’s why to me, people counts more than the technology. It is people, especially great people who can make great products that our customers cannot live without. In my position, I will continue to recruit best people to join the team so that everyone benefits from working with great people.
Looking at my recruitment, I can’t help but think of Liu Bei’s visits to convince Zhu Ge Liang to join him. 三顾茅庐. How true. So far, I have spent at least 3-4 discussions to convince real good people to join us. Though the success rates are 50-50, I am happy with my fair share of success.
This month, I managed to invite another brilliant mind and individual to join me. Not easy to convince but worth the energy. I strongly believe his addition will be able to help us to scale to the next level. His humility, respect and deep understanding of technology will be a great asset to us. Also, a great person for the current team members to look up to and learn.
Can’t wait for him to come onboard!
With best regards
