This month has been a fulfilling month for me, both on work as well as my personal life. I am a person who strongly believes in “pay it forward”. There are many successful people in the world who would contribute back to the society in many significant ways. For me, I am still work-in-progress. Not really achieved the success that many have equated with. But I have made a strong personal commitment that as long as I can contribute, I would do my best to “pay it forward” now, rather than wait. Hence, any invitation for me to speak to others, I would do it wholeheartedly.
This month, I was given two opportunities to attend two events. The first event was the graduation ceremony at Temasek Polytechnic. I was Guest of Honour. I did my little part to motivate the graduands. But what impressed me most is the top student – Bala’s speech. He came from a poor family and did not do well for school’s exams in Primary School. But he understood that if he remained status quo, he would never be able to get out of the poverty cycle. Through sheer hard work, he made it to the top in Poly and was awarded Lee Kuan Yew’s Gold Medal. The strong cheers that he received were certainly well deserved. He is now determined to become a medical doctor and is applying to study medicine. I wish him all the best.
His sheer determination reminds me of what Will Smith said. I love this quote. This is my all-time favourite:
The only thing that I see that is distinctly different about me is that I’m not afraid to DIE on a treadmill.
You might have more talent than me, you might be smarter than me, but if we get on a treadmill together, there are two things:
1- You’re getting off first
2- I’m gonna DIE
It’s really that simple”
The second event was at Chung Cheng High (Main). I was invited to share my life experiences with Secondary 3 students. I was impressed with the students questions and certainly future looks bright for us ! I hope I can inspire more to take the path to be an entrepreneur and bring the society forward. I have the chance to use an example to illustrate the self-belief.
I quote: “A bird up in the tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because her trust is not on the branch but on its own wings. Always believe in yourself.”
These two events certainly gave me many thoughts. Being an entrepreneur is never easy. Life is tough and life is really difficult at times. Many have asked me what are some of the characteristics that made good entrepreneurs. I would say, in May 2013, I experienced both.
Sheer Determination. Self Belief.
With these two characteristics, I also hope to draw inspiration and push ahead.
Next month – June 2013 – we will go live for TreeBox. We will finally announce to the whole world that we have a great product that is ready to help our customers.
With best regards,
